Jabulani concept We want to create a bubbling and communal pot’ that celebrates the increasingly diverse culture of Plymouth’s Stonehouse district. Showcasing what modern Stonehouse has to offer, and providing vibrant, far-flung experiences through global food, art, music and culture. Jabulani will provide an incubator venue for local (BAME) residents to start food businesses. Empowering people who would otherwise be excluded from creating a business, by the high start-up capital costs and intimidating regulation. With the increasing death of the high street, and the dominance of corporatized-malls and homogenized food chains, inner-city business districts need to focus on new and unique experiences to survive. Jabulani would look to cook-up and celebrate a modern Stonehouse experience, born and bootstrapped from local people and culture. The venue would provide an inspiring, affordable hub for local residents, as well as becoming a destination, drawing in visitors and revenue from across the city and further afield. As an integral part of a bigger picture for community regeneration, Jabulani would be working in unison with Nudge, The Plot, Union Corner and the Manor St Market, to generate a powerful collective buzz for the Union Street area. Jabulani would be offering grassroots regeneration built on showcasing and celebrating the increasingly diverse local culture, rather than excluding residents through externally-led gentrification.
